Mulgrave is a vibrant and diverse community located in Melbourne’s south east, 22km from the CBD. It is home to one of the most multiculturally diverse electorates in Victoria and plays host to Melbourne’s first weekly farmer’s market.
Both the Princes Highway and the Monash Freeway (originally the Mulgrave Freeway) run through the centre of the Mulgrave district and there are several significant Victorian landmarks within the electorate including the Sandown Racecourse and Motor Racing Circuit, the Springvale Crematorium and Cemetery and the former Waverley Park which hosted 732 AFL matches from 1970–1999.
Sections of the Sir Kenneth Luke stand remain at the ground and the oval has also been preserved from this time. They are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as they are considered historically, socially and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria. They now form part of a larger residential development.
On the south-west corner of Springvale and Ferntree Gully Roads at the north of the electorate sits the Village Green Hotel considered hallowed ground for many legendary Australian rock bands that played this venue for several decades from the 1970s. Among others, INXS, AC/DC, Skyhooks, Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo and The Cockroaches (who became The Wiggles) bought rock music to Melbourne’s south east during the period of great suburban expansion that also saw the development of Chadstone Shopping Centre and Monash University.
The suburbs of Mulgrave, Noble Park North and parts of the suburbs of Dandenong North, Noble Park, Springvale and Wheelers Hill comprise the 28 square kilometre electorate.
